"CHICAGO —  Standing before a church congregation that has witnessed inner-city violence firsthand, Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said Sunday that more must be done to end a social ill that is "sickening the soul of this nation."

Obama told churchgoers at the Vernon Park Church of God on Chicago's South Side that too many young lives are being claimed by violence and more must be done to combat the problem.

"From South Central L.A. to Newark, New Jersey, there's an epidemic of violence that's sickening the soul of this nation," the Illinois senator told the crowd. "The violence is unacceptable and it's got to stop."

Nearly three dozen Chicago students have been killed this year, according to Chicago Public Schools. Obama said that figure is higher than the number of Illinois serviceman who've died in Iraq in 2007.

"We need to express our collective anger through collective action," Obama said.

He said the government needs to permanently reinstate an assault weapons ban and close regulatory loopholes that protect unscrupulous gun dealers."

.........

"He later added, "There's a reason they go out and shoot each other, because they don't love themselves. And the reason they don't love themselves is because we are not loving them enough." "

Does the idiot really truely think that the violence will stop if there is a permanent ban on so called assault weapons ????? LMAO !! Guns don't kill people, people kill people !!!! Where has he been all his life its been proven time and time again that banning gun ownership by responsible citizens only invites more crime....... I fail to see his logic..... Its people like him who I'd like to see get car jacked by an armed person and his bodyguards not have weapons to protect him....... might make him think a little before he goes spouting off at the mouth about gun bans.....

Comes down to parents not being home when kids come home from school, because they both have to work or if a one parent family maybe have to work two jobs........Now if we didn;t have so many illegals driving down the the working wage,  maybe one parent could earn a decent wage and possibily one could stay home and supervisor the children, or not have to work two jobs to make ends meet.

more than one way to skin a cat Mr Obama.   Quit telling people what you think they want to hear and think seriously about what will really work.

Um, as much as I don't like Obama, a ban on assault weapons certainly doesn't hurt anyone. I'm all for the second amendment, but assault weapons are overkill in my opinion. They are unneeded by responsible citizens. By all means, have a handgun, shotgun, or hunting rifle. The only time military grade assault rifles should be used is in a war. They are weapons designed for bloody rampages that have no place in the realm of self-defense. Please don't flame.

Not going to "flame" you, Domenico - just please read all the information contained in those two links. The term "assault rifle" in relation to this proposed ban is a misnomer - something you'll be able to see very clearly for yourself once you read the links (and the proposed legislation itself). So basically, the ban would ban firearms used for hunting (like fast action shotguns)? How about actual assault rifles such as those used by the military? They're not for hunting.

Domenico - You're still not getting it - automatic "assault" weapons have been "banned" to all civilians but Federal Firearms License holders (and the military and police agencies, of course) since 1934!

There is NO need for further "bans" for truly fully-automatic, military-style "assault" weapons - IT'S ALREADY DONE! ( http://www.gunsite.com/gun_control_gc... ).

And for the love of God, could someone please explain to me why it is that otherwise intelligent people can't seem to grasp the fact that no amount or type of "law" is going to keep these kinds of weapons out of the hands of the lawbreakers? Or why they can't see that the only possible reason for more "bans" and more "laws" is to dis-arm the legitimate, law-abiding citizen? Leaving the criminals as the only ones with superior armament?

My apologies - I'm getting a little tense.

By all means - watch the video on the second page I just linked you to - it is VITAL for you to see that one to understand what this is all about. Pete

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Either I'm dense, tired, or probably both. Curious, how about a bill banning dorm students from purchasing firearms? Would you be against that?

I have an AK47 semi-Auto with a scope that I use to hunt deer with it is a very nice deer rifle. There is only one problem my rifle has never assualted anyone and probably never will. Obama really wants to disarm you so his muslim buddies can come in and kill your family and you without any harm to themselves. They might even take a few virgins while they are at it. Make no bones about it Obama is a muslim and he will always be a muslim. Males do not get out of the muslim religion without being targeted  for not being faithful to his religion. As for the Dorm students they should all be armed after passing the appropriate background checks.

Domenico -

Did the "gun-free" zone within Virginia Tech's grounds protect the students?

Did the campus police or regular police save anyone's life?

Citizens are still the first line of defense in many communities. When things go awry around you, it's better to be well-armed than unarmed. I have experienced Marshall law during L.A. riots and 9/11. Nothing ever felt better than an arm with a lot of clips when it seemed anything could come barreling through the door.

Tell Obama to Shove It....once again, all pol's just Pander to whatever audience they think is listening.....

Been down this gun ban road since 1968..same old rhetoric...the facts show ' gun control' has Zero impact on crime, the only folks who buy own and use firearms legally are Law abiding citizens. You want to control crime, control the criminals.

Last time up north in NYC when power was out for 24 hours, and the scumbags were wanderin around stealin, rapin et al, I know I felt better with the Smith & Wesson at hand to protect my family.... the police passed by ONE TIME in 18 hours.

I shall continue to stay armed, and fight any potential legislation designed to infringe upon that right.

This Home guarded by Smith & Wesson 3 nights a week..Guess which 3 !

The law is for the lawless, but when you apply it to law abiding people, you just plain miss the mark.

Let's see I own an AR-15, and a Spanish CETME. I have owned AK variants, Ruger Mini-14's, and a list of "scary" rifles that have never assaulted anyone in the last 25 years. I may not need them as Domenico believes, but choose to possess them because I want to. No one has the right to dictate to another what they should be allowed to lawfully possess. No one needs to possess a sports car capable of 100+ mph; but if they are financially able- more power to them.  I've committed no crime with my decision to possess rifles that may look scary to some.  Amen bugsygirl for stating the obvious that attacking the law abiding for the crimes of the lawless is foolish.

1) What's an assualt weapon?  How do you define it - describe it?  Material constructed out of?  Rate of fire?  Magazine size?  Collapsable stock?

2) Pornography is unneeded.  Most of prime time tv is unneeded.  Back yard swimming pools which cause more deaths than assualt rifles are unneeded.

Besides - imo - US v Miller essentially held that military weapons have greater protection from the 2nd than hunting weapons ;)

absolutely - would you ban them from watching porn?

besides - if more people on campus had guns fewer students would have died

First of all, porn has nothing to do with safety. Secondly, no one would have died at Virginia Tech if there was a law banning the sale of firearms to dorm students. Thirdy, teens often experience emotional distress increasing the risk of firearm misuse. I now do see that Obama a pushing a bad bill, but that does not mean that simple safety measures shouldn't be implemented.

The second amendment was not set in place in order for citizens to shoot for sport or recreation. The second amendment was set in place so that citizens would have the wherewithal to defend freedoms and thwart tyranny.

Yes, I would definitely be against a bill that prohibits dorm students from purchasing guns. I would go so far as to say that every law-abiding adult citizen should own weapons and know how to use them proficiently, including dorm students. At least they would then be able to defend themselves the next time some mentally disturbed individual opens up on them.

Beware of any government that attempts to disarm the citizens. Unprincipled politicians will use emotionalism to their own advantage under the guise of the 'common good'.

Authority without freedom is tyranny. Freedom without authority is anarchy. There must be a balance of freedom and authority.
