CLOTURE VOTE FAILS 45-50
THIS ROUND OF AMNESTY DEFEATED!
(BUT FIGHT NOT OVER YET)

I want to personally thank every grassroots American who took an active stand against this amnesty bill. What caused this defeat? Clearly it was the grassroots pressure.

One mllion contacts with the Senate
Since the announcement of this bill a few weeks ago, Grassfire team members sent over 700,000 petitions and faxes to the Senate. When we add in the estimated phone calls, contacts by our team members alone to the Senate far exceeded 1 million! And that's just one organzation. Add in the work of so many other organizations and we know the Senate was deluged.

"Where's The Fence?" Ads Worked!
Our "Where's The Fence?" ad campaign also had an impact. Of the 11 Senators we targeted in seven states, 10 voted "Nay" on cloture. Of course, our ads were one component of an overall strategy that Grassfire developed with other grasroots organizations to focus pressure on key senators.

In summary, we have never seen a grassroots response like this -- it was truly unprecedented. Without grassroots pressure, the Senate would have passed this bill weeks ago.

Bush-Kennedy Not Dead Yet...
If you listened to the floor speeches after the vote on C-Span, then you know that the battle is not over. The will bring amnesty back -- sooner rather than later. But for tonight, I want to thank you for everything you did to take a stand against this amnesty bill.On behalf of our entire team, and on behalf of the entire nation, thank you for taking a stand! Thank you for ordering faxes and for all your other heroic efforts to stop the amnesty bill.

Review--Cloture is the procedural vote that brings debate to an end and allows a final vote on the bill. The SEnate needs 60 votes to "invoke cloture."

Steve, just read a report on Fox News web site that aides are saying the bill is dead. Have you seen it? Any truth to it?

Kennedy has a unique abiltiy to make me stand in front of my TV and curse, and I havent cursed in years. I think Ill make it my new profession to just make him mad. Its kind of fun to watch.

Called both Pryor and Lincon. Had no trouble getting through. Were pretty decent about it.

Lincolns office told me right from the beginning she was gonna vote for this bill as she had voted for the bill last year. Now Pryor seemed to be waking up to many problems in the bill and their consequences. Today is gonna have me on pins and needles.

Agreed. But I call anyway. She won't forget that so many are against it. Pryor is about 50/50 with us.

Wondering if Reid is going to keep his word and kill the bill if cloture isn't invoked. Checking around various news agencies and keep getting the word that he won't get the required 60 votes. Crossing my fingers.

Kennedy looks confused, more than he usually does. Keep throwing the ammendments in.

That is so funny.  You know how when kids play a game like rock-paper-scissors to decide something, then the loser says "lets do 2 out of 3"  then "lets do 3 out of 5"  then "lets do 5 out of 7" then....

Since he is in charge, I guess there is no way to hold him to the "I will pull the bill if it does not pass cloture"

Hoping he is using it as an excuse to kill the bill. Doubt he can garner 27 votes by this evening. Calling Senators again, the snake isn't completely dead.
