Republican Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota introduced an amendment to the immigration bill to close the gaping hole in our national security created by so-called "sanctuary cities." These are cities where officials have foolishly decided to forbid their local law enforcement from inquiring about the immigration status of individuals they arrest and from reporting those here illegally to federal officials.

The Coleman Amendment wouldn't have required local police to use their own resources to enforce the federal laws or to conduct immigration raids. It simply would have required them to share information on the immigration status of suspects in order to help keep all of us safer. As we saw in the Fort Dix case, in a post-9/11 world, local suspects can be terrorists that threaten all of us.

Sen. Coleman's amendment was defeated in the Senate by the narrowest of margins, 49-48. But two senators who could have changed the outcome of the vote -- Republicans Sam Brownback of Kansas and Craig Thomas of Wyoming -- missed the vote.

Sen. Coleman should reintroduce his amendment and the Senate should vote again -- with Senators Brownback and Thomas present this time. The danger posed by so-called "sanctuary cities" is too high not to try again.

Email or write Sen. Colman to insist on reintroducing this amendment.

The importance of this bill should require ALL Senator's to be present during ALL the debates. Those who don't show or don't vote should be nailed!

LOL...wouldn't surprise me if John Effin Kerry skips the debates (after all, he knows everything and doesn't need to be bothered with such "mundane things") and bet he misses that vote too.  I see last Monday he didn't vote either.

At this time I have lost faith in our government. I am concerned about making new laws while ignorning the laws that are already on the books yet are not enforced. Are the new laws going to also be ignored as well?

We already have Federal Immigration Laws. These laws are clearly against illegal immigration, yet, cities, counties, and some states have declared themselves"sanctuary cities". They refuse to obey current Federal Laws and also refuse to allow their employees to work with Federal Agents to enforce these same laws. Is this or is it not treason?

Oakland California has declared itself a "Sanctuary City", but we who live in this area already knew that . While in the heart of the African-American Community of East Oakland, it looks like you're in the Burrio, in fact, Roosters can be heard crowing for miles throughout the area. Funny colored houses and strange looking fences have popped up all over East Oakland.  It is not a pretty sight.

People who have lived in this area for many years are frustrated about living with the noise level, increased traffic, increased crime, cars parked on the lawns and sidewalks, and houses with as many as 30 people living in them. Yet, the Oakland Police Department will not respond to their calls.

Can I declare that I will no longer file taxes because I have declared myself exempt (a santuary person)?  I think the local enforcement officers will gladly assist the IRS in collecting tax money from me. In other words they can pick and choose which laws they will or will not obey.

I have been curious as to the amounts of these so-called immigrants in homes? Does the City Health Dept have any ord's against this? And if there is, how do the Sanctuary Cities deal with it? If the amount of people living in 1 home effects the neighbor's, and the city won't enforce code, that should be a fairly easy win in court?

Also, the garbage pick-up? It doesnt matter how many people are in a home, they are only allowed so many cans? But then again, Waste Management hires illegals, so they would dump their compadres cans no matter how many they arent paying for.
