Let's use this thread to help us track how Senators say they are going to vote on the Bush-Kennedy amnesty bill. Find stories online or better yet -- call and document how these senators from this state are going to vote. If you call, include date/time of your call.

Switchboard: 202-224-3121.

Be sure to ask:

1--Does the senator support the Bush-Kennedy comprehensive amnesty bill?

2-- Will the Senator vote to "invoke cloture" (i.e. end debate) on the amnesty bill?

It should come as no surprise that Senator Nelson and Senator Martinez support "amnesty". They won't budge. Here's a copy of an email I received from Senator Martinez. Dear Ms. Shelby: Thank you for taking the time to contact me. I appreciate hearing from you regarding comprehensive immigration reform and would like to respond to your concerns. Delaying comprehensive reform does a disservice to America. It is my hope that my colleagues and I in Congress can come together and produce a tough but fair and workable piece of comprehensive immigration legislation that President Bush can sign into law during the 110th Congress. To do this, we must secure the border, provide for the economic labor needs of our nation, and contend with the 12 million immigrants already living here illegally. It is my firm belief that addressing border security while doing nothing to address those already living here illegally would amount to de facto amnesty for those 12 million. Fortunately, the border is getting more secure by the day. Last year, the Congress passed several laws that will authorize and fund the construction of 700 miles of double layered fencing and security barriers, 9,150 new detention beds, 3,736 more Border Patrol Agents--up to15, 000 over the next six years-- and $682 million for border tactical infrastructure and facilities construction. This constitutes a tremendous investment and commitment to securing our borders, and I am pleased with the progress we are making in this area. However, I know more remains to be done. This year, it is my hope that Congress will begin to address other important aspects of immigration policy where similar reforms and improvements are needed. For instance, we need strict interior and employer enforcement along with a workable employer verification system that the Department of Homeland Security can use to ensure that unscrupulous employers are kept in check while providing legal certainty for businesses. In addition, I fully support the creation of a viable temporary worker program that allows individuals who wish to fill labor shortages in the United States to come here and work for a short period of time before returning home. Finally, we need a fair way to deal with the 12 million aliens who have entered our country illegally or overstayed their visas. It is in the United States' national security interest to learn the identity of these individuals. While the best way to do this is still being debated, continuing to simply look the other way is not a viable or responsible option. America's history of welcoming immigrants to our shores must never be forgotten; and it remains imperative that we continue to attract and include not only the best and brightest who want to work and live in the United States to make our country greater, but also those who are willing to work hard at the jobs that many Americans are unwilling to do. Finally, there must be charitable, humanitarian exceptions, so that we are not tearing apart families or using the law to treat people unjustly. As we continue our work this Congress, please know that I will work diligently with both Republicans and Democrats to enact legislation that will produce the needed immigration reforms our country demands. This is an important national security, economic and humanitarian challenge, and I know the American people are looking to Congress for action. Again, thank you for sharing your views with me. If you have any additional comments, please contact me. For more information about issues and activities important to Florida, please sign up for my weekly newsletter at http://martinez.senate.gov. I have received the exact same letter from Mel Martinez.  Senator Nelson is also for passing this bill according to someone in his office.  I have made my wishes known to both by calling as well as sending faxes.  I guess I will have to voice my disapproval of this when it's time to vote again.   Really stinks to think that our representatives are more interested in representing Mexico than their constituants.

Thanks for sharing. So, we received a "generic" letter.

I have voiced my absolute opposition, but both offices seem disinterested and rather bored with my call. That was the feeling I had. You're right. It stinks that they are more concerned with illegals than  with their constituents.

We from Florida need to stand tall against amnesty for the people who enter the US through the back door.

Martinez will support amnesty as he entered the US not so many years ago. He was given a free ride back then and continues to give free ride to others who enter US.

My letters have been ignored.  At least you got a generic response.  I guess that tells me where "my" so-called senator stands.

I shouldn't have to press anything for English..............

I too got that "generic" letter!!  I have made so many phone calls to Washington, sent so many faxes, and written so many letters and I believe they have all fallen on deaf ears.  The only thing being accomplished is that these people are annoyed at having to answer the phoneand hear the fax machine ringing off the hook.  If only the White House switchboard operator had any pull we'd be heard!  It is all very discouraging.  This is supposed to be a country where our voices are heard....not so!  I too am a BIG Tom Tancredo fan!!  I think right now he is the best man for the job!  A big plus for him is that he is fighting to release Compean & Ramos and he very much opposes any amnesty for ILLEGAL aliens...GO TANCREDO!!

Guess I need to check out  Tancredo a little more. Thanks!

 On another note-------------

I propose a possible solution that could help tremendously with both the immigration crisis and the war in Iraq.

It's a simple concept, but it would require a constitutional amendment. All illegal immigrants wanting to stay in our country should "serve" our country first.

We should make it a requirement that they have to serve in the military for a period of time and if that means sending them to Iraq, so be it. After they serve our country in an honorable manner, then they can return to this great land of ours and apply to become citizens.

In the words of the late President John F. Kennedy, they should: "ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."

Oh Dear...A lot of people I talk to say the same thing. You're not alone. But then that would be too easy. See how much they really want to be a part of this country. I let Mel, Bill, Charlie, and Weldon know I started a petition calling for TERM LIMITATIONS on this web-site. I received answers from all. Not generic. They all answer me now.

It is amazing how ticked off people are at this whole Illegal Immigration mess and how easy it is for me to talk about the issues and get people ticked off. But, when it comes time to wrtiting letters, faxing or calling our representatives, these people can't be bothered, which ticks me off!

Tom Tancredo is our best and only hope for president!!!!

rforeman...you are absolutely right!!  EVERYONE needs to call Washington, send faxes (free through www.NumbersUSA.com), and send email.  Although it seems these emails geberate generic letters. there must be some tally on the other end that counts how many come in.  I have heard that the switchboard operator at the White House has become irritated about the influx of calls.  The last few times I called this was quite evident :o)

As far as having illegals serve in the war - this is an absolutely FABULOUS idea!  Do you think our government will go for it? No they will not because that would cut their spending and they will have to account for where the money really goes!  They say want illegals here to take the jobs that no Americans want ie picking produce and the dirty work part of landscaping.  How long before these illegals are here before they want "fair" treatment and try to take OUR jobs away at cheaper wages...that is more than they make now but less that we make??  In every aspect this proposed bill (or any other like it) is a recipe for disaster!!

Oh and one more thing...if these people commited illegal activity by crossing the border does the government really believe they will be law abiding citizens???  I think not!

I called both Martinez and Nelson's offices.  Martinez is obviously supporting the Bush/Kennedy amnesty legislation.   Nelson's office said he has not made a decision yet on the legislation, a little cob rolling here, but I told the receptionist he should definitely oppose it.  We shall see!!

I too called both Martinez (whom I call Moron Martinez) and Nelson and I got the same responses.  Of course Martinez wants this bill because it will make him feel more the majority and Nelson may just have a conscience!

I called Martinez's office and the rude female staffer would not tell me his position on the amnesty bill and then hung up on me. No answer from  Bill Nelson's office. On another point, just went to my daughters graduation and it was done in Ukraine,Russian and Spanish along with English. such a warm and fuzzy Country we live in.

If Martinez thought his vote on immigration was going to cost him re-election, he sure wouldn't vote for it.

Now, I'm not from Florida, but seems to me the "we's" and the "they's" are pretty evenly split there.   Also, you need to tell him that Mexican American natives are definitely not for this bill....<and they are not, particularly here in Texas.>   And, make that office believe that he's going to have a very difficult time being re-elected, and for them not to be so totally disconnected from the general view of the American people and misread the Florida voters.   The GOP might even run someone against him in the primary....afterall, the GOP primarily doesn't like this bill.

Tell them that you are ex-county GOP Chairman and you read the lay of the land purdy goooood about what his future election will be.....yeah, that's lying.   You think they don't lie to us?!!

Be forceful.   Act like you mean it.

I, too called both Senators' offices this afternoon, and was told that Senator Martinez is in support of the bill; Senator Nelson's office said he's reading it, and hasn't yet decided.

I told both offices that I talk to a lot of people, and have yet to hear one voice in favor of this AMNESTY BILL.

It really disgusts me that Congress, in general, even finds this worthy of (supposedly) serious consideration!  I assured both offices that a vote for this travesty will assure my vote against them in any future election.

Just the fact that Ted Kennedy's hand was in it should be enough to know it's more than worthy of total rejection!

Can anyone offer any shred of hope that we may someday have another congressional body with at least an iota of concern for the welfare of this great nation?

Suzi I agree with you!  We have been lied to so much for so long maybe some retaliation lying will do some good!  I am going to call Moron (Mel) and Nelson again tomorrow with a spanish accent which I can do real well) and tell them both that I am opposed to this bill as it is unfair and see what their reaction is!  Have any of you ever listened to Joyce Kaufman (she too is of Hispanic origin)?  She is a radio talk show host @ 850 am.  She is BIG TIME opposed to this bill.  She represented Florida in "Hold Their Feet to the Fire" in Washington.  Well...MOST of her callers are Hispanic!!!  Those who came here legally major oppose the unfairness of this bill!  It is a real hoot to hear caller after caller...ALL HISPANICS!!!  This is NOT a racial issue...this is an issue of FAIRNESS!  Why should we foot the bill for these people who are common criminals???  I know we all agree here...it just feels good to vent to anyone who will listen!
