From the Santa Fe New Mexican

Check out the last few paragraphs LOL

By Barbara Ferry | The New Mexican May 2, 2007

Hundreds of people gather at DeVargas Park to show their support, denounce raids by federal agents Hoisting signs reading ``Stop the Raids'' and ``Don't Separate Families,'' immigrants and their supporters gathered at DeVargas Park on Tuesday to press for immigration reform and protest recent arrests by federal agents.

``Let them hear us all the way in Washington; we want reform!'' shouted a member of the band Misterio de la Cumbia, over a sound system so amplified that it seemed just about possible.

Organizers of the event and of similar protests around the country said they didn't expect a repeat of last May's demonstration, when record numbers of immigrants marched and rallied across the country. But predictions that people would stay away -- either out of frustration with Congressional inaction or out fear of immigration authorities -- weren't borne out in Santa Fe.

Hundreds of people, some wearing symbolic white clothes and green ribbons that signified hope for immigration reform, filled the park.

They snacked on shrimp cocktails, Frito pie, tamales and cake.

Marcela Diaz, director of Somos Un Pueblo Unido, said volunteers distributed 900 portions of shrimp cocktail, 1,000 Frito pies and 1,200 bottles of water.

The food was donated by local restaurants and businesses that wanted to show support for legalization, Diaz said. ``We're estimating at least 2,000 people (attended). We're incredibly encouraged.''

Speakers at the rally focused on recent arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. Agents arrested 30 undocumented immigrants in Santa Fe in late February as part of a national operation called Return to Sender.

Mayor David Coss said the operation was poorly handled, and the federal agency didn't communicate properly with local police. In the days following the raid, Coss and police officials said police were not informed of the operation and did not participate in it. But since then, Coss said, ``we heard reports that our officers were there, and we checked our dispatch records and found out that they were.''

Santa Fe has a policy barring police from cooperating with federal agents to enforce immigration laws. Coss said the federal agency ``co-opted'' local police during the operation. ``They said they were looking for specific people, but it became a random search for documents, ``Coss said. ``That's the worst way to do law enforcement, # and they dragged our police into that.''

He said in the future, if a federal agency calls for local police backup, the request will have to get approval from a police captain before officers will respond.

Coss acknowledged that could cause delays in responding to emergencies. ``It's unfortunate, but it's also unfortunate that ICE has helped unravel the trust we've worked so hard to build with the community,'' Coss said.

Coss said he was also seeking help from members of Congress to find out what has happened to the 30 people who were arrested.

Andres Mendoza, a construction worker from Chihuahua, Mexico, said he knows some of the people who were arrested and returned to Mexico. ``But they're already back here in New Mexico,'' Mendoza said.

As storm clouds gathered over the park, a man who said his name was Pablo slurped shrimp cocktail and predicted a sunnier future for undocumented immigrants. ``Congress is going to pass (an immigration) law, and everything's going to turn out fine,'' Pablo said.

What's really unfortunate about the illegal immigration debate is that American citizens who advocate open borders and side with illegal aliens don't understand the geopolitical push for the elimination of all borders in order to maximize and grow profit margins for transnational corporations. Allowing illegal immigration to go on for decades as it has in the U.S., quietly allows regional integration to take place before anyone can discuss it let alone resist the dissolution of U.S. sovereignty.

The Global Regime is hungry and rabid. It wants a body of slave labor to access anywhere in the world. The Ford Foundation and numerous transnationals have poured millions into preparing to remount dominance over workers in the U.S. It's developed a front to hide behind and the green light has been given for a full assault.
