SB 113
Presidential Primary Bill
Authored by Senator Ron Calderon
***

Senate Bill 113 requires that the California presidential primary election be conducted on the first Tuesday in February while maintaining the current June primary for legislative and congressional races.

California is the biggest and most influential state in the union yet its current June presidential primary virtually ensures that the major party nominees will be determined long before our voters cast their ballots.

A February presidential primary will encourage presidential candidates to campaign here and to debate and discuss issues and policies important to our people. California voters deserve to play a major role in deciding the presidential nominees.

Under this bill only Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina will hold primaries or caucuses before California.

Along with many members of the Legislature, Governor Schwarzenegger has publicly stated his strong support for moving our presidential primary forward.

While this bill has no formal opposition, counties have expressed concerns over the costs – specifically, they do not want to get stuck with the bill.

As you know, the Legislature did reimburse the counties for their costs associated with conducting the 2005 special election. Although fiscal considerations are still being discussed, I am confident that we will do the right thing again.

There has also been much public speculation about this bill being tied to a ballot measure to reform redistricting or term limits.

Let me be clear about this. Discussions regarding redistricting and term limit reform will undoubtedly continue and may or may not come to fruition, but that is a separate and distinct issue. SB 113 is intended to give California voters a greater voice in choosing the next president. A voice that is long overdue.

Please join me in returning significance to California’s presidential primary and making the collective voices of our people heard nationwide by supporting SB 113.

Ron S. Calderon

one question Karonica, Do the illegals in California have the right to vote yet? I see congress chaffing at the bit on these issues to swing it in certain directions. But New York gives illegals priveledge to vote in local elections. Im curious. Thank you in advance.

We need to make our voices heard by contacting our senators/legislators to see what bills they are passing that will establish rules stopping illegals from voting in our upcoming elections.

I realize that illegals are not suppose to vote, however, I'm wondering why there was so much noise in California when a letter was sent out to the Latino community just before the November 2006 election by an Asian running against Sanchez in Orange County explaining that only legal citizens can vote. The Democrats were trying to prosecute the Asian and made him look bad for trying to get Illegals to obey the law.  What is wrong with this picture? Democrats want the Illegal votes.

I believe that pollworkers should be instructed to make sure that no illegal votes. However, it is my understanding that representatives (especially Obama) is currently trying to make bills that would prosocute anyone who tries to stop illegals from going to the polls. Something is wrong with this picture.

Any comments or information regarding this very important issue?

According to the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Website in Los Angeles, CA, one must be a citizen of the United States and meet all of the the following criteria in order to vote.

Who can register to vote?

You may register to vote if you meet ALL of the following criteria:

Not in prison or on parole for the conviction of a felony
Not declared to be mentally incompetent by a court.

Considering that Mexifornia is practically a part of Mexico now with all of the Illegals, Illegals that probably are finding ways to vote Illegally of course. I don't think I would want them to have any more say than they already do. Don't get me wrong I don not dislike California I lived there for over 8 years and I still have family and friends there but if you don't think that millions of illegals voting could compromise the primary then I think you may need to re-evaluated... during the last race a politician addressing a Hispanic audience made the Statement that you don't need "papers" to vote.... had she not made that statement in public and outraged the public she would have probably won and a man that is agianst illegal immigration and open borders would likely be sitting at home with no say in the matter... I hope they don't move it myself...for the best interest of our country
