Gov. Rick Perry (TX) just signed into law a requirement for all 6th grade girls to get the new vaccine that prevents cervical cancer, a sexually transmitted disease.

He issued it in the form of an executive order and bypassed the legislature to sidestep conservative and parents' rights groups.

I wonder if it is just a coincidence that I also read that Gardasil, created by Merck, is not getting used much.  It seems that requiring it to be given virtually guarantees sales of the overpriced vaccine.

Personally, I am appalled by this new law and believe this is something that should be between a parent and his or her daughter.  An STD is not like measles or polio which can be contracted just by being near someone who is ill with the disease.

As a parent myself, this is concerning. I wanted to find a reference article to point to so that people may read more about this.

Read more about Merck's efforts to get a law past guaranteeing them sales!

You can contact Texas Governor Rick Perry here.

Based on what I've read, it appears that Merck is using their lobbying funds to get guaranteed sales. This is both morally questionable, but also interferes in our rights as parents.

Every Texan, parents or not, should shout to the high heavens about Perry again taking the side of big business instead of middle-class Texans! Why do we continue to "let" the government legislate away our rights...The issue is not nearly as important as the fact that government is trying to control our personal lives and we are letting them!

I do agree with Sean Ivy it is morally questionable. We do have rights as parents and need to address this before it spreads like"wildfire".I believe some times in trying to do good politicians rush and do not give their decisions any fore thought!

Being the parent of a daughter myself and being from a family that has lost all of my relatives from cancer of one kind and another then i'm afraid i am for this vaccine,I don't agree with the way the big pharmecutical companies are going to profit from this but to be honest anything that could save a life from any kind of cancer has to be welcomed,I have heard people go on about how it will encourage kids to have sex BS! if we as parents have instilled in our kids the decent morals that they need then that should not happen,Another way of looking at this is what if in 10/20/30yrs down the line your daughter/neice/friend gets cervical cancer how would you feel knowing you could have helped prevent this by letting them have the vaccine? after all it only takes the one time having sex to catch a STD..

Losing family members to cancer is certainly a tragedy.  However, the issue here is not whether this vaccine promotes premarital sex.  The issue is the fact that cervical cancer has been on a steady decline in the U.S., largely due to the pap smear.  In fact, between 1955 and 1992, deaths from cervical cancer in the U.S. dropped by 74%.  They continue to drop by 4% every year.  It is only a leading killer in less developed nations.  It is not a public health concern that warrants giving every girl the vaccine.  Mortality from cervical cancer is rare in the U.S. among women of all age groups.

The fact is that 80% of us will have been exposed to HPV, the virus that causes cervical cancer.  In the vast majority of people, the body clears up the virus on its own and the person does not develop cancer.  For the tiny percentage who will possibly develop cervical cancer, the changes occur very slowly over time and a pap smear will find those changes and prevent the disease entirely.

The clinical trials for Gardasil were severely flawed.  Aluminum was used in the placebo group to artificially increase the number of side effects the placebo group had to make the side effects from the Gardasil group seem much less significant.  Aluminum is a known neurotoxin.

Five women who received the Gardasil around the time of conception gave birth to babies with birth defects compared to zero in the placebo group.  Carcinogenicity and genotoxicity have not been evaluated in Gardasil.

My main point is that cervical cancer is not a public health issue here in the U.S.; certainly not enough to warrant every girl getting an unproven vaccine.  Rick Perry does have financial ties to Merck, the producer of the vaccine.  That is the only reason he signed this executive order.  The only emergency exists in the offices of Merck because Gardasil has not been used as much as they would like and this is a sure way for them to make a lot of money.  They are paying a great deal of money lobbying in multiple states to get this vaccine made a requirement.  Logically, it makes no sense.  Financially, to Merck, it makes very good sense.

As it stands now, it seem to me there are far more risks associated with the vaccine than with getting cervical cancer.  Cervical cancer is avoidable with pap smears.

Our Country is slowly turning communist.  Our Government has made decision that we should be making our selves.  They change our way of living and we never have a say so in their decisions.  We should have a voice when their vote changes our lives and especially when it comes to our children.  My children are grown but I can tell you if they were not grown the fight would be on.  I wouldn’t want someone injected my child with something I know nothing about.  I watch the news every day, two or three times a day and this week is the first I’ve heard of this.  I think the rich can find another way to make money besides injecting our children with drugs.

I find it interesting that the vaccine is for a STD virus.  Like this is the top health priority for kids.  Let's face it, these anti-culture warriors have a plan and they are targeting one of the major top states (California, Illinois, Texas, New York) because they are test cases for policy implementation in the rest of the 50 states.

Why don't they try combating REAL health threats, rather than providing the means to exacerbate threats that have no good reason to exist?  Oy!

And we are not just going socialist, we are going totally ideological.  Nothing like turning THEORIES into religions and cramming it down a citizenry's communal throat. The U.S. was found as a REPUBLIC based on the NATURAL LAW.  Democracy was a practical mechanism, a way in which authorities could incorporate practical concerns into the formulation of civil laws based directly on the Natural Law (Commandments 4-10 of the decalogue).  Capitalism didn't even exist.  Did I say oy, yet?

Check out Hayek's "Road to Serfdom."  Written in 20th C.  Insightful little book.

Peace!

someone has to connect the dots. How much money has Merck given this loser of a Govenor? Yes we are being killed by a death of a thousand cuts. Our borders are open why I don't know, politicians think we need them to save us, but in reality we need to hang most of them from a tree.....

Gov. Perry should take a look at the history books, the last Gov. that ruled this state by edict was run out of Texas he was sent here by D.C. after the civil war and run out by Texans. Bush seems to support this guy I wonder if the President is a Texan or if he is a Maine yankee boy who is trying to corrupt us.

STD Vaccines are just plan wrong...if we had people that lived moral lives we would not have these problems....if they want to combat cancer then generate a vaccine just for cancer...in Feb 2008 I will be starting as an Medical Coding and Reimbursement Specialist..schooling currently...Medical Coding is a growing industry as more conditions becoming more apparent and more people are seeing more doctors of all types...

Well, it looks as though Merck caved into pressure that was put upon them and has cancelled its lobbying efforts to get Gardasil made a required vaccine. Since both the American Academy of Pediatricians and the American Academy of Family Practitioners both agreed it was far too early to mandate this vaccine as well, logic finally won out. And, their stock fell in price a bit, too. What a nice outcome for the people of this country. Hopefully, Rick Perry will get a clue now. We just took our 11 year old daughter to the doctor, because of an illness.  While we were there, we took the opportunity to quiz the doctor about this vaccine and to get his personal opinion of it.  He stated that not only is it an expensive vaccine but he feels there is no guarantee that it will still be effective 20 or 30 years down the road.   He personally would not give the vaccine to his daughters, and feels that it is an unnecessary vaccine.  The responsible thing for parents to do is to teach their children about safe sex, and the importance of regular checkups with the GYN.  What else will the government want to inject into us or our children in the future.  They(the government) treat the american people as if they are incapable of properly caring for our children and or ourselves at this point.

My question to everyone, is there anything & I mean anything that you as a person an indivisual should not be able to speak? There is only one answer. (NO!!) it is all about common sense. Those who says yes, or hesitate have lost their way.

I belive that parents should decide on that matter, but why, if it HPV is sexualy transmited, 11 year old should be considered, they shouldn't have sex at all!

Very simple! But I think that every woman should consider getting this vaccine, for her own good, and from the other piont of view, it is cheaper to get the vaccine than paying medical bills after you get the cancer, or worse we all need to pay for them with our tax money! They have discovered a vaccine against cancer and YOU still don't want anything to to with it, than if you don't have insurance don't be asking US to pay for it!

AS of Friday, Perry has not changed his stance however his spokesman said parents could opt out under certain circumstances. Immediately following, the Archdiocese of Dallas has stated, any 11 yr old girl that does not have the vaccine can not attend schools within their diocese. OPT out? Guess it is not an option.

The Archdiocese of Dallas must be nuts.  I wonder how they'll feel if a few years from now, all these little girls who were forced to get this vaccine have some horrible, unforeseen side effects.

I am not against this vaccine.  I think it is a good CHOICE that women should be allowed to consider.  Forcing it on little girls is ridiculous.  They don't even know if the protection it provides will last until most of these girls start becoming sexually active.

Perry started this insanity and even though people who know far more about these things than he does ( pediatricians and family practitioners) think it's too early to make it a requirement, Perry probably will not change.  He must know he made a mistake but will never admit it.  I still wish one of the independent candidates for governor had won.  Even Kinky Friedman would have been a lesser evil.

I'm not sure how many of you would remember the drug Thalidomide that was put on the market in 1957 .. It was a drug given to help with  morning sickness, said to be perfectly safe &  sold over the counter in some areas under a different name. It wasn't until 1961 it was pulled off the market when it was found to cause severe diformities in babies. Whereas it is true the drug was not approved by the FDA it was still legal for samples given to doctors to be handed out to patients. It took 4 yrs. before the side effects of the drug were brought to light and as a result, thousands of deformed babies throughout the world.

The STD vaccine has not been around long enough to determine it will do what Merck says it will and that it's true safety has been tested. Does anyone know how much responsibility  Perry will  take should something go wrong?
