DHS To Destroy Sabal Palm Audubon Center???

In a recent New York Times article, A Natural Treasure That May End Up Without a Country, Dan Berry explains the DHS cruel treatment of The Sabal Palm Audubon Center in Brownsville, Tex. Named for the stocky palm trees of the Rio Grande Valley, the center is home to rare birds and other wildlife, and may end up on the Mexico side of the border fence.

For the past decade, the property has been a stomping ground for illegal aliens. Ten years ago, federal agents intercepted hundreds of illegal immigrants crossing Sabal Palms. However, border security has increased and the patterns of the illegals has changed and the number of interceptions has decreased. However, with a double layered border fence, DHS can optimize their border agents and use them elsewhere while the border fence will keep illegals from crossing at Sabal Palm.

Will the the U.S. really build the fence on the North side of the audubon grounds? Probably not. Despite the fact that last week, President Bush and his Department of Homeland Security (DHS) waived environmental and land management laws to hasten the building of the border fence (see article), the DHS is still working with the city of Brownsville to make this event as easy as possible.

DHS has specifically agreed to study border security alternatives with the
University of Texas at Brownsville and the city officials of Brownsville, Tx.

Despite the waivers, nothing seems to be set in stone and everythings seems to be negotiable with the locals.Yes, DHS must practice conservatism, but not at the expense of national security. Grassfire will be presenting petitions on Capital Hill in the end of April. Please support the building of the border fence by signing the Grassfire's "Build the Border Fence as Promised" petition.
