Patty Compean, wife of imprisoned U.S. Border Patrol agent Jose Compean, offers her thoughts on the crisis facing her husband, her family and our nation.

Dear Grassfire team,

I really hope you are moved by this tribute that my little sister created. The idea came about when I mentioned to my sister how much Avril Lavigne's "Keep Holding On" song made me think about Jose every time I would hear it. The desperation he must be feeling not knowing what was going on with his case until he read about it in a letter or heard it on the radio and what I would tell him. This song also reminds me of all of the victims of this war on law enforcement and their families who are going through the same thing as we are. What they must be going through and feeling. It is my hope that after listening to it, you will send it to your friends and family.

Dear Grassfire team,

I am writing in response to the recent El Paso Times article entitled Man shot by jailed ex-border agents tells his story by Louie Gilot. This article is nothing new for those of us who are familiar with the media coverage of the Ramos and Compean case, which was not only pro-smuggler, but ignored the facts, which is what the government needed. For those who are not aware, you need to read the article and judge for yourselves. For my family, it’s upsetting at how a newspaper can still be pro-smuggler despite what the transcripts exposed and all the new facts since exposed.

I find it really interesting how this man, Osvaldo Aldrete- Davila is offended, disturbed and surprised because he is being referred to as a criminal, doper and a smuggler. I’m sorry but I was taught if you lie you’re a liar, if you kill you’re a killer and if you smuggle drugs/people into any country you’re a smuggler. It doesn’t matter why you did it.  As a Border Patrol Spouse I learned “it is what it is”.

Mr. Davila says he does not wish to be photographed or let his location be known for safety reasons. Funny, since he’s the one who has been and is still being protected by The United States Government. I doubt very much anything will ever happen to him. It is ridiculous to me that he doesn’t want any pictures taken of him or let his whereabouts be known considering the fact that his picture has/is already out there. Lets be realistic for a moment. If the U.S. government found him to testify against Agent Ramos and my husband, and several journalists have spoken to him from his home, he must not be too hard to find.   

He says he wants people to know the truth or the whole story. Now my question is --  does he want the real truth or his truth, which is the truth of a drug smuggler who lied, protected the cartel he works for and the people who he referred to as his friends, who were more than willing to avenge his being shot in the butt. Not the back as the Times reported throughout this ordeal, the butt.

It has been 2 years since the incident, 1year since the trial, and as you can see in this article Osvaldo Aldrete- Davila is still protecting his friends and business associates. So why should we believe him. Oh, that’s right because our government did, while ignoring his many crimes committed that day.  

I am speechless when it comes to his complaining how he has been unable to work for the last two years. Really? Are you sure? According to a document exposed by Congressman Dana Rohrabacher this doper has not been without a job for the past two years. Of course he is not afraid of the second load to come up and bite him in the butt, because he is clean courtesy of the US Government who has the power to cover it all up. A government who has chosen to go to the extremity of violating the civil rights of two Border Patrol agents by hiding, twisting, falsifying the truth in order to cover up its own corruption.

The doper got shot at and hit in the butt.  What did Mr. Davila expect would happen to him when he crossed into the US illegally, driving a stolen van full of narcotics, attempted to evade federal agents driving and on foot, wrestled with an agent while resisting arrest and pointed what the agents perceived to be a gun at them? Did he really think they were going just let him go? Or even worse look the other way so that he may kill them?

He feels bad for everybody, yeah right. He feels bad he is being seen for what he truly is a criminal, doper, and claims the worst part is that his children are the ones affected by all this. I don’t think he had them in mind while smuggling.  He probably also feels bad for being an idiot and refusing the reconstruction of his urethra, which by the way the American government offered to pay for throughout this nightmare.

 At the end of the day, Osvaldo Aldrete Davila is a smuggler, a doper, and a very selfish man who has used many excuses for his behavior. His first excuse was he needed money for his driver’s license. His second excuse was his mother needed heart medication, he was desperate and in need. Well, my family was and still is desperate.

In the beginning we were desperate to find and pay for an attorney, we were desperate to come up with money to pay for my husband’s bail. Yet, we did not, nor did it ever cross our minds to break the law. Instead we behaved lawfully and are still behaving lawfully for what we need to survive. We sold our house, our furniture, and moved in with family in order to survive. We lost a comfortable life, but you know what? We sleep at night knowing that we have done it right and that our children still see us with respect. Yes, that includes my husband Jose Compean who spends 23 hours every day in a broom closet of a jail cell. Despite him being treated like a criminal, he has retained his dignity as a man. I have yet to hear him complain, cry, or feel ashamed. He has always held his head up high and when asked about what happened the day he came face to face with the doper, he has always told the truth. Why? As he says to this day, “because I have nothing to hide, I did my job that day,” unlike the government, local media, and the dirtbag doper himself.
