Skip-Links For This Issue:
#1--New "Ultrasound Choice" Bill Introduced
#2--Where do the presidential candidates stand on abortion?
#3--40 Days for Life prayer campaign has Big Goal
#4-- Chicago reviews Planned Parenthood Fraud?
#5--Judicial Activism strikes again (and again) for abortion
#6--Additional pro-life notes

#1--Brownback introduces Ultrasound legislation
Presidential candidate and Kansas Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), has introduced the Ultrasound Informed Consent Act (S.2075), a bill that would require doctors to perform an ultrasound and inform a pregnant woman of its implications before performing an abortion.

Grassfire team members may recall that nearly two years ago, we commissioned a poll asking, “Do women have the right see their ultrasound and hear the heartbeat of their unborn baby?” Of the 763 randomly chosen citizens asked, 77 percent said they support granting a woman this right. (Survey was conducted on 10/15-16/05). With such an overwhelming response, Grassfire met with members of the Senator’s staff to share our Ultrasound findings and urge the Senator to consider championing such a bill. At the time, there was great interest, but other pro-life legislation took precedent. We are thrilled the Senator is now taking action!

This bill is one of the components of our Petition for Life. Please go here to sign. For additional information on the bill, go here.

#2--Where to the presidential candidates stand on abortion?
Gearing up for the 2008 elections finds obvious dissention within the GOP and voting citizens need to understand where the presidential candidates stand on pro-life issues. For more information, go here.

#3--40 days for life--eliminating abortion through prayer and action
On September 26, 2007 a very special 40-day prayer vigil began, specifically targeting Planned Parenthood clinics around the country. The 40-day vigil has already mobilized tremendous volunteer support and stimulated a strong response from both the pro-life and pro-choice sides.  This vigil has the potential to be the largest simultaneous anti-abortion protest in American History. Through prayer, community action and political pressure 40 days for life attempts to reduce the number of abortions performed. Go here for additional information.

#4--City of Chicago reviews Planned Parenthood for fraud
A federal judge Thursday (9/21) denied Planned Parenthood's motion for an emergency court order that would give permission to open a "new health clinic" in Aurora, Illinois.  The Court's hesitancy comes from whether Planned Parenthood is guilty of fraud when it applied earlier for building permits under its subsidiary's name - Gemini Office Development LLC. Additional information. By the way, Planned Parenthood reported a record-number of abortions in 2006 -- 264,943. And your tax dollars contributed over $305 million to Planned Parenthood's efforts.

#5--Judicial activism strikes again in support of abortion
Earlier this month, a federal judge in Missouri blocked a new Missouri state law that would have required abortionists to have clinic privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the abortion clinic. The judge stated that the law would have had an "immediate chilling effect on all abortion counseling within Missouri." Once again, federal judges feel a need to side with abortion in the face of what the citizens of the state of Missouri and the representatives felt was a sensible and reasonable public health law. Background story.

Also, the Arizona Supreme Court let stand a state appeals court ruling on September 26, making Maricopa County officials take pregnant inmates for abortions. County Sheriff Joe Arpaio had prohibited the taking of prisoners for abortions because taxpayer funds would be involved in the transportation and staff time needed. (Source).

#6--Additional Pro-Life Notes
--Jersey Clinic Closes -- After decades of dissension within a New Jersy community, a controversial abortion clinic has finally closed its doors.  Earlier this week a spokesman for the New Jersey Health Department announced that the Alternatives abortion clinic has opted to surrender its license to the state.  The abortion clinic has chosen to close instead of correcting the list of violations detailed in a report that caused the recent shutdown of the clinic.  (Source)

--Australian Scientist to lead embattled CA stem cell research program -- Alan Trounson, a prominent Australian scientist, has been named to run California’s $3 billion stem cell research program. There have been problems in establishing the research program, as the previous president stepped down last December along with several other executives on staff. (For more)
