Grassfire's Ultrasound Choice now a Brownback bill

Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) just introduced the Ultrasound Informed Consent Act (S. 2075), legislation that would require that a doctor perform an ultrasound and then share the results with the woman and allow her to view the images before performing an abortion.

“It is necessary and right to provide a woman seeking an abortion with all the available information so that she may make the most informed decision possible,” said Brownback.

Grassfire team members may recall that nearly two years ago, Grassfire commissioned a poll where we asked, “Do women have the right to see their ultrasound and hear the heartbeat of their unborn baby?”

Of the 763 randomly chosen citizens asked, 77 percent said they support granting a woman this right. (Survey was conducted on 10/15-16).

With such an overwhelming response, Grassfire met with members of the Senator’s staff to share our Ultrasound findings and urge the Senator to consider championing such a bill.

At the time, there was great interest, but other pro-life legislation took precedent. We are thrilled the Senator is now taking action!

Personally I would support such a bill if it ever comes up for a vote. however I don't believe the women in this country would support it. Even if they don't support abortion, they believe in women's rights enough to believe a woman has the right not to see her baby's ultrasound before an abortion.

Please clarify - I just reread the e-mail and I am wondering if this was always available and a woman could say, "Yes, I want to see it", or "No, I don't want to see it?", or has this opportunity to see and hear their baby never been automatically presented as an option?  If it has not been presented as an option, then that is wrong.  We all have the right to see our test results, have our x-rays explained, watch an ultrasound given for any reason as it stands now.  If this right is not currently extended to a woman considering an abortion, then they are not being given full disclosure.  I would particularly support this bill if it would make showing the ultrasound to any woman considering an abortion a requirement prior to the procedure.  There will be some who do not choose to see it, but others will and they should be given the choice.
