DREAM Act Fails 52-44 After Massive Grassroots Effort To Senate

The Senate failed to pass the cloture vote on the Reid/Durbin DREAM Act (S.2205) today by a vote of 52-44. 60 Votes were required to invoke cloture and continue floor debate on the bill.

The cloture motion to proceed failed after a massive grassroots effort from citizens across the country opposiong this amnesty bill. Grassfire.org team members alone made well over 100,000 citizen contacts in phone calls and faxes to Congress within 24 hours of the vote. In fact, 14 of the 24 Senators identified by Grassfire as officially having "no position" on the bill voted NO on the cloture motion. See details here.

Once again, grassroots pressure made the key difference. But this battle is far from over. We expect Amnesty Senators to bring this bill back while continuing to press for other amnesties. See issue briefs.

Harry Reid has scheduled a cloture vote on the Dream Amnesty Act for 10/24. This comes after citizens like you again shut down switchboards in opposition to the Dream Act when it was pushed as an amendment last week.

Now, Durbin and Reid are pushing the Dream Amnesty Act straight to the Senate floor as a stand-alone bill -- S. 2205 -- despite overwhelming grassroots opposition.

IF they are making their decisions from the input of those he/she represent, it is no wonder they are "lost". The people cannot comment on something they know nothing about. First, there is not ample time for the people to get involved. This is quite obviously a planned exercise to prevent citizen involvement. Second, even though the topic is of extreme importance, it seems to never appear in the media. IF it should make it to some out-of-the-way newspaper, It will appear on the back inside page of the Religious Section or Classified Section and in the smallest print available.

This is another indication that government decisions are designed to be left to Washington. It is also a rather deceptive system ....... adding immigration related items to the 2008 Defense Appropriations Bill. Now that's about as reasonable as putting a 13" wheel on your SUV that has 17" wheels ...... what in the world is it doing there. One would never look for look for an Immigration Amendment being tied to the Defense Appropriations Bill. The government is like a doctor ..... when he gives you your physical ....... you wonder why he's smiling and has both hands on the back of your shoulders.

I have called the editors of 6 area newspapers, here in SE Alabama, and asked about this specific amendment on this bill and "supposedly", they had yet to get anything on it. IF, in reallity, they don't have anything ........ then why not??? THIS is Public Knowledge!! To withhold this type of information, intentionally, should be a criminal offense. A delay such as this will only benefit the passage of the amendment. It can prevent any outside input.

THIS particular action, today and in the future, is something we must overthrow. It is an intended violation to and greatly hampers one of our main "supposed" freedoms. This allows the government to sell what they want ..... not neccessarily what the people and the country need and/or want. It is OUR COUNTRY, not just theirs and it is OUR CONSTITUTION, not just theirs. Not only must we protect our country from human polution, we must protect her from a quasi-dictatorship. This is exactly what happens to your lawn when you allow weeds to spring up and go unattended. I think I'll check with "Ortho" and see if they have some "Politician Be Gone".

Long Live America ..... The Land of the ......., The Land of ......, The Land ......

I called Senator Kyl's office in Phoenix to inquire about his position on the Dream Act. I was told that Senator Kyl would not state a yes or no position until the bill comes up for a vote. I find this entirely unacceptable, especially after his support of the recent amnesty mess. I wa also told that he does not support amnesty. If so, then why can he not come out with a definitive position against the Dream Act?? I am worried stiff, and I did not see his name on your list of Senators pro, con, or waiting to be heard from.
