DREAM Act Fails 52-44 After Massive Grassroots Effort To Senate
The Senate failed to pass the cloture vote on the Reid/Durbin DREAM Act (S.2205) today by a vote of 52-44. 60 Votes were required to invoke cloture and continue floor debate on the bill. The cloture motion to proceed failed after a massive grassroots effort from citizens across the country opposiong this amnesty bill. Grassfire.org team members alone made well over 100,000 citizen contacts in phone calls and faxes to Congress within 24 hours of the vote. In fact, 14 of the 24 Senators identified by Grassfire as officially having "no position" on the bill voted NO on the cloture motion. See details here. Once again, grassroots pressure made the key difference. But this battle is far from over. We expect Amnesty Senators to bring this bill back while continuing to press for other amnesties. See issue briefs. (Original post on this page) Harry Reid has scheduled a cloture vote on the Dream Amnesty Act for 10/24. This comes after citizens like you again shut down switchboards in opposition to the Dream Act when it was pushed as an amendment last week.
Now, Durbin and Reid are pushing the Dream Amnesty Act straight to the Senate floor as a stand-alone bill -- S. 2205 -- despite overwhelming grassroots opposition. To send your faxes, click here or click on the graphic.
