#1--Wanted: Values Voters to weigh in during primaries In 2004, pundits coined a new phrase to describe the voters who dominated the elections: Values Voters. Just three years later one must wonder if Values Voters have gone silent. They held a presidential debate and the top tier decided not to attend. Now there is talk among Values Voter leaders of a mass exodus should Giuliani win the nomination. The bigger question is, if the Values Voters represent such a large constituency within the G.O.P, how come none of their natural candidates has been able to crack the top tier? Go here for my recent blog entry on whether Values Voters will play a key role in 2008. #2--A GOP darkhorse…. Or two
The best candidates for GOP dark horse have emerged, one based on poll results and the other from fundraising. Ron Paul shocked the establishment by raising $5 million in the third quarter (over 30,000 donors, 70% online), putting him in the running with the so-called top tier Republican candidates. The second darkhorse, Mike Huckabee, raised just one-fifth the funds of Ron Paul but continues a slow rise up in the polls. The latest polling from Iowa puts Huckabee in third and in position to create a stir in the early states. Huckabee would seem to be a natural fit for the Values Voters, but as noted above it is yet to be seen if Values Voters will emerge as a force in 2008 -- or if Huckabee can raise the funds necessary to really be in the race. By definition, a "dark horse" emerges when a political party cannot settle on any one candidate. A true dark horse must have the ability to be a compromise candidate -- one that differing factions within a political party can agree to support as a way to unite a divide party. A governor from a southern state seems more likely to be a compromise dark horse than a ideologically driven Congressman. #3--Dems Demogogue Children’s Health
Congress has passed a major expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and now a major showdown is looming on a veto override vote. Democrats are demogoguing the issue, running ads showing needy children and saying, “President Bush just vetoed Abby.”
Of course, the ads don’t tell you that some families earning as much as $80,000 will qualify for taxpayer-funded healthcare. Or that revisions in the program will open the door for illegal aliens to access SCHIP health benefits.
The Left has launched a massive grassroots effort designed to tar and feather opponents of this bill. We will be calling on the Grassfire team to take action as well to stop this bill.
See our briefing on how illegals will get taxpayer-funded health coverage under the new SCHIP. #4--Amnesty bills coming back Our contacts on the Hill have alerted us that the Dream Amnesty Act will be making a comeback in the next few weeks, along with the AgJobs amnesty bill.
Together, these two bills would grant amnesty to millions of illegals and put in place two key components of the Bush-Kennedy amnesty plan we defeated this past summer. We expect the push to begin next week. Stay tuned, and read our briefings on AgJobs and the Dream Act. #5--Abortionist’s illegal procedures exposed A Michigan abortionist's medical license was suspended after an undercover investigation exposed a slew of illegal procedures--including using dirty medical instruments and violating the 24 hour waiting period. To see the shocking video and get updates on how Hillary and Rudy are handling the abortion issue, read our Pro-Life Report.
