#1--140,000 Citizens sound off on SPP Summit President Bush is taking a break this week from his summer vacation in Crawford to attend the Security and Prosperity Partnership summit near Ottawa, Canada. About 10 days ago, Grassfire launched a petition opposing our government's rapid move toward a "North American framework" that we believe threatens our sovereignty. The Administration says the SPP is nothing more than a "dialogue." But this dialogue has involved two heads-of-state summits, other summits with Cabinet secretaries, reams of memo and reports, official working documents, and a stated goal to create a North American "framework." (Grassfire backgrounder here.) More than 140,000 Grassfire team members signed our petition in just 10 days. And those petitions are now in Ottawa as part of the on-the-ground protests headed up by Howard Phillips and our friends at Conservative Caucus. Corsi Interview Part 2: And if you are still wondering why President Bush has been so insistent on passing amnesty, then please listen to part 2 of my interview with Bestselling author Jerome Corsi. #2--Giuliani finds faith in fence while Bush recruits volunteers. Last week we learned of a Border Patrol memo seeking volunteers with welding and fence building experience to help the Administration reach its goal of 70 miles of fence built this fiscal year (by 9/30). For the record, only 13 miles of fence has been built, none of which is the double-layer mandated by Congress. Also for the record, 70 miles was a pathetic goal to begin with, considering the Secure Fence Act authorized 854 miles of fencing. While the Bush administration was recruiting volunteers from the border patrol for the fence, Rudy Giuliani came out last week trying stake out ground as the candidate who will secure the borders.
This is the same man who in 1996 said, as mayor, "there is absolutely nothing I can do about" the 400,000 illegal aliens in New York City. Now Giuliani says he will use technology to "reduce and ultimately end illegal immigration." Clearly, the mayor is feeling the political heat and does not want to go the way of John McCain.
#3--Which candidate will stop illegal immigration? Giuliani's comments beg a very important question: which of the current crop of candidates will actually, build the fence, secure our borders and stop the crisis of illegal immigration?
It's a question I get asked quite often interviews. Here's my answer: no candidate will get the job done. Now, please understand that I'm not taking a cynical view. But the fact is, no politician is going to ride in on a white horse and save the day. This day will only be saved by the citizens.
You and I are the ones who stopped the Bush-Kennedy amnesty bill. You and I will be the ones who will stop the post Labor Day amnesty push. And let's face it -- you and I are the ones who will determine whether the fence actually gets built. That's why Grassfire is ramping up our "Where's The Fence?"(tm) campaign. Be watching for our newest TV ad after Labor Day as we keep the pressure on to build the fence.
If you have not yet signed our petition calling for the fence to be built, go here.
#4-- F-bomb coming to Family TV hour? Our contacts in Congress have alerted us that an effort is underway to make the f-bomb acceptable for family viewing hours. As you know, Grassfire has been at the forefront of encouraging a climate of broadcast decency. We anticipate this will be a key legislative issue this fall. Stay tuned.
#5--Grassfire invated by Apple virus True confessions -- I am a carrier of the dreaded Apple virus. Every office has one -- that stubborn soul who simply can't shake his or her personal affection for all things Apple -- the Mac, the IPod. Well, with the advent of the IPhone, the Apple virus has officially spread through the Grassfire offices. To read a humorous accounting of the virus' spread, go here. #6--MoveOn becomes MoveOver.org! Final note. A website that tracks web traffic recently showed that Grassfire.org has caught MoveOn.org in web traffic visitors. MoveOn gets all the press, and all the deep-pockets funding from the likes of George Soros. But grassroots momentum has clearly swung to our side. Radical leftist groups like MoveOn have overreached in their calls for impeachment and their opposition to the war. As a result they are missing issues like immigration. November 2008 is still a long ways off, politically speaking. Grassroots conservatives have a historic opportunity ahead of us. But we must continue to press our issues. Steve Elliott, Grassfire.
