To quote from the liberal media:
"The immigrants I know are family people, hardworking and friendly, who want only the opportunity to provide for their families and be recognized as intelligent, productive humans who have a lot to offer if we'll just give them a chance.

Why is welcoming newcomers so difficult for us when we ourselves are the beneficiaries of the struggles of previous generations of immigrants?"

Two very pertinent points.

1. No one I have ever met has problems welcoming hard working family members who just want to better themselves... In fact our country has a huge immigration quota that is skewed to allow family members to reunite in our country legally. Hundreds of thousands of people are waiting patiently in line to legally come here under that system...

2. The America our ancestors founded has always been a welcoming place, yes with some tensions when large influxes come, but still welcoming. This continues today in quotas of allowed immigration unmatched by any other country on this planet.

However, unlike the picture of friendly new neighbors moving here legally to better themselves, the writer would attribute to todays massive influx of scoff-law illegal workers the picture that really belongs to the throngs waiting patiently for permission to immigrate and become American citizens.

The majority of those coming illegally today are not immigrants coming to make a new home, but cross border migrants coming to secure income higher than they can at home, but planning always to return once they have gained money to live on. ( Discounting the hundreds of thousands of Asians who are coming but do not ever intend to return unless as millionaires so they can be exempt from the despotic conditions in their homelands.)

The sad truth is that the majority of illegal aliens present in the USA today have no intention to become citizens, they intend to loot the job market here for all they can get and return to their native country to enjoy the spoils.
The fact that the hispanic illegals are mostly low wage reflects the facts that they are usually low skilled at communication in our language and/or have little work experience to base claims for higher wages on when they get here.

Because they have poor communication skills they are preyed upon by their better communicating Spanish speaking "friends" who hire them as day laborers or through temporary employment agency scams or provide them with false documents and translation help for work and housing needs.

Other groups of Illegals from other cultures have other experiences.. Many East Europeans seem to gravitate to lite assembly or even truck driving, at commensurately higher pay. Again they are preyed upon by co-linguists who "aid them" in acquiring jobs, licenses, and housing.

Many Indians ( Asian not American variety) and other English speaking illegal aliens are in the computer/information technology trades also truck driving and warehousing or retail sales. Their communication skills allow them to deal with the public better and their average wage even as an illegal is commensurately higher.

The average American is not bothered by LEGAL migration near as much as they are by the massive illegal wage lowering scoff laws who are actually coming in numbers that are crushing our societies ability to ignore them.

Liberals who continue to pretend that only right wing extremists are demanding the upholding of our national laws are in denial of reality.

Come to think of it what's new about that?

Welcoming new comers is not a problem at all. The problem only arises when those new comers are ILLEGAL. The presuppostition being made by many lawmakers and the media is that lawbreaking illegal aliens have a right to be here.

My personal presupposition is that as soon as "new comers" cross our borders illegally, they forfeit any rights to our land, and are to be rejected. This is a fairly simple concept that I was able to explain with relative ease to my 6 year old daughter when she saw Grassfire's "Where's The Fence?" ads on television.

Hmmm, if a kindergartener can readily grasp the concept of right and wrong, why can't our lawmakers?

I have no respect for those who arrive here illegally. My mother came to this country legally and so have millions before and after her. It is a great disservice to their legacy to attempt to justify the behaviors of those who are here illegally.

Illegal doesn't mean bad,  does it?

That all depends, did you pro illegal scum give them your Social Security number to get work or did they scam one of ours?

Are they living in your house or are they in government housing?

Do they have health insurance or are they sponging off taxpayer paid scams?

Do they speak english or are they demanding taxpayer funded interpreters?

Are taxpayers paying to educate their kids or are they sending them to private schools and paying the bill themselves?

You show us a picture of a family as an example, I would show you a picture of the illegal cockroaches demonstrating in Los Angles saying this is their country, ReConquista style.
