As a law enforcement officer with twenty-two plus years of exerience I am pleased with the increasing amount of states adopting concealed carry permits for it's citizens. Recently Indiana opted to issued life time permits to it's residents over eighteen years of age. In my opinion this goes a long way in demonstrating the faith and trust Indiana leaders place in the general populace. This act also shows the belief our Hoosier leaders have in the second ammendment.

Today more than ever it is important for all Americans to be able to defend themselves and their families. With the threat of terrorist acts, our lack of concern for border security, and an internal cancer eating away at our moral fiber and families we cannot nor should we depend upon our over taxed law enforcement personell to be able to protect us.

The majority in our society believe that police officers are bound by law to protect them. This is not the case. Police officers take an oath to support the constitution, enforce the laws, and protect the citizens. At no point does the oath obligate the officer to place his life on the line howbeit they will but they are under no obligation to do so. In my jurisdiction we offer free gun handling classes to any citizen interested. It is just our way of saying we support the second ammendment and want to go further than just giving it lip service.

96harley;

I agree with much you have to say about carrying firearms; I'm a little weak on the age of 18 though.  I presume a background check is conducted before-hand.  Maturity counts big-time with me.

One of the best laws passed in recent years is the federal concealed carry law for retired police officers.  This literally puts hundreds of thousands well-trained and seasoned law enforcement professionals out there with the lawful ability to carry concealed firearms.

mastertrooper, You are correct for I too am somewhat concerned with 18 yr olds carrying. But on the other hand I know many 18 yr olds who have more common sense than some 30 year olds. Background checks are however conducted. I have former DARE students come out to my house to target practice. To date two, with two on on the hook, went into law enforement with the Indiana State Police.
